‍ Online Therapy in Ontario

Secure Virtual Psychotherapy for Burnout, Anxiety, and Emotional Eating, Wherever You Are in the Province

Looking for online therapy in Ontario? If your schedule barely leaves room to breathe, let alone drive to an appointment, online sessions can make therapy much easier to fit into your week.

When your days are already full of work, family and the people who rely on you, travelling to an appointment can feel like one more demand. Online sessions remove the commute, the parking and the waiting room, so the hour you set aside can go to you. Many clients book their session over a lunch break, between commitments, or at the end of the workday from a quiet room at home.

Online Therapy From Toronto to Northern Ontario

My office is in Guelph, but you don’t need to live nearby to work with me. Whether you are in a condo in downtown Toronto, a farmhouse in rural Wellington County, or a small town in Northern Ontario, you can meet with me from home, your office, or any private space where you feel settled.

Is Online Therapy Right for You?

Online therapy can be a good fit if you value privacy and flexibility, live far from a therapist you want to work with, or find that your energy is better spent on the session itself than on getting there. Some people also find it easier to open up from a familiar space.

It is not the right fit for everyone. If you would feel more comfortable in the same room, or don’t have a private place to talk, in-person sessions in Guelph may suit you better. We can talk through what feels right during your free consultation.

Does Online Therapy Work?

This is one of the most common questions people ask, and it is a fair one. Research comparing the two formats is encouraging: a 2021 meta-analysis, which combines the results of many studies, found little difference in outcomes between psychotherapy delivered by video and psychotherapy delivered in person.

The approaches I use, including CBT, Emotionally Focused Therapy, DBT skills and somatic work, can all be adapted to video. Every person is different, though, so we will check in along the way about how online sessions are working for you.

How Online Sessions Work

Before Your Session

Sessions take place through Jane’s built-in secure video, so there is nothing extra to sign up for. Before your appointment, you will receive a link to join. On a computer, the video opens in your web browser with no download needed. On an iPhone or iPad, you will need Jane’s free Online Appointments app from the App Store.

Setting Up Your Space

Choose a private, quiet spot where you won’t be overheard or interrupted. Headphones help with both sound and privacy. Some clients use their parked car if home doesn’t feel private enough. A glass of water and a few minutes to settle beforehand can make the transition easier.

During Your Session

When you click your link, you will enter a virtual waiting room until I join you. Each session is 50 minutes. At the start of each session, I will confirm where you are, so I know you are in Ontario and where to direct support in an emergency.

If the Connection Drops

Technology isn’t perfect. In our first session, we will agree on a backup plan, such as a phone call, so a dropped connection never leaves you wondering what to do next.

Privacy and Security

Your privacy matters, especially when you are sharing something personal. As a Registered Psychotherapist, I handle your personal health information in keeping with Ontario’s health privacy law, the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).

Jane, the platform I use for booking, records and video, states that its online appointments are encrypted, never recorded or stored, and designed to comply with Canadian privacy laws including PHIPA. You can read Jane’s privacy and security information here.

Who I See Online

I provide online therapy to adults (18+) who are located in Ontario at the time of their session. I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), registration #003928, and bring more than 14 years of clinical experience to my work.

Fees and Extended Health Benefits

Sessions are 50 minutes and $175. Many extended health benefit plans include coverage for Registered Psychotherapists, so it is worth checking your plan’s coverage before you start. Payment is by credit card or e-transfer, and you will receive a receipt to submit to your insurance provider. I don’t direct bill.
